"If you spend any time amongst the trees in the Carmannah Valley you start to recognize them as individuals with their own identifiable characteristics. It was this individual quality I wanted to portray, painting them as old people, ancestors... I saw them with native characteristics in their connection to the earth and they seemed to be reaching, embracing the sky."
